Discover the steps for installing and configuring Sametime 8.5 components as Windows services and learn something about IBM WebSphere Application Server configuration in the process — from locating the profile files and modifying the properties files to registering the components with Windows and configuring dependencies.

IBM Lotus Sametime 8.5 has been available since late December 2009, and Lotus customers are starting to install pilots to learn its new capabilities and systems. For Sametime administrators with very little DB2 and WebSphere application server experience, there is one thing that never fails to amaze: Sametime 8.5 doesn’t install or configure any of its WebSphere Windows components as Windows services. It’s not that the WebSphere application server doesn’t support running the components as Windows services; it’s just that IBM didn’t have the time, or maybe the inclination, to provide automatic installation and configuration of these components as services.
I’ll explain the steps to install and configure your Sametime 8.5 components as Web services and then point you to a free tool you can run on your Sametime 8.5 Windows server that configures them for you. By the time you finish reading, you’ll understand a bit more of the fine art of WebSphere application server configuration, and you’ll have a time-saving tool to help you get the job done more efficiently.
For the purpose of this discussion, I assume that all of the Sametime 8.5 components, excluding the Community server, are installed on the same machine.
